Message to Parents at the Roosevelt School about gel gun incident

December 8, 2022

Dear Roosevelt K-8 School Community,

This morning, while our upper campus students and staff were out at recess , a car passing by with an unknown individual discharged a gel pellet gun from the window. The dissolvable gel pellets hit some of our students and a teacher. School staff responded quickly and notified BPS Safety Services along with Boston Police. All the impacted individuals were seen by the school nurse and our school social worker. No injuries were reported at this time. Boston Police are actively investigating this incident, and the unknown individual could face criminal charges. We have since learned that there is a TikTok challenge that involves the use of gel pellet guns. We would ask parents to please have conversations about what they see on TikTok and other social media platforms, and the injuries and damage that can come from these challenges. We appreciate our staff’s quick response and BPD and BPS Safety Services support in handling this incident. If you or someone you know becomes aware of any safety concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately, as sharing information is critical to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff. The Roosevelt K-8 School, and all Boston Public Schools will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff. We will keep you informed if we learn any additional information about the incident. We wanted to let you know about this incident in the interest of open and transparent communication. We also want you to know we take the health and safety of our students within our school very seriously.
